Course Reflection

Hello! This will be my final post on this Florida History Blog. I have thoroughly enjoyed this class and the learning style that Professor McCoy has given us. This paragraph below you explains some of the topics that I learned throughout the course of this Florida History class. Having lived in Florida all my life, I had no idea all the stages that Florida went through to become the Florida we know and love. In this class I learned about the ancient tribes that lived in Florida before us. My favorite of these tribes was The Calusa. I enjoyed learning about their belief system, and how they thought the afterlife was going to be. Regarding race, I had a prior knowledge to the evils that were committed in Florida throughout the civil war, but this class explained in further detail the grit of slavery in the south. The book,  A Land Remembered , tied in very well with this timeline of slavery and early living in the Florida wetlands. Regarding class, I enjoyed learning about the ...

Fort Caroline Located in Arlington, Jacksonville Florida.

Image
My Thursday afternoon started off with me making my cup of coffee and heading out the door in search for Fort Caroline memorial in Jacksonville Florida. Fort Caroline was exactly 25 minutes from my house and is located in the northern Arlington area. I arrived at Fort Caroline park at 10am and made my way into the trail. I spent about 45 minutes walking around the park and taking pictures. I also did some research the day before to learn a little more about this fort before I explored it.  Fort Caroline was built in 1564 by the French ruler, Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere. This time period is important because at the time, the French were colonizing Florida in attempts to get ahead of Spain. According to the book, The History of Florida by Michael Gannon, The ruling of Fort Caroline did not last long. "Supplies soon ran short in Fort Caroline, and not enough food could be obtained from the natives. A series of mutinies and desertions began. Eleven men fled in a small craft, and then...

Chapter 15 Worksheet Grayson Foye   Who is the author of this chapter and what information can you find about the author elsewhere in the text?   Jarrel H. Shofner.        According to this chapter, list 2 things that were in desperate need of “reconstruction”   2 things that this chapter makes clear that need reconstruction is obviously slavery, and the economy after the civil war.   Florida stands apart from other areas of the South in the way that General Newton handled two main areas: politics & freedmen.  Discuss both. Florida was reformed faster in regards to freedmen. This is because he informed farmers to start paying their slaves for their work. Regarding Politics, Florida stood apart from other states in regards to the Direct Tax Commission, which helped sell confederate property on union lines.   Demand for cotton was ( increasing or decreasing) during the early years of reconstruction.     ...

Was Slavery Really Abolished in Florida on 1865?

Image
In the novel, A Land Remembered, Tobias provides a guy named Skillit with a job after he was freed from slavery. Slavery was abolished May 20th 1865 and was abolished under Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. It took the state of Florida an extra 2 years after the Emancipation to officially abolish slavery in the Floridas.  But, even after the slaves were "officially free," there were many slaves who had no where to go after they were legally free, and many were still enslaved after the proclomation. In the novel, A Land Remembered, Skillit was on the run after he was freed, but had nowhere to go. He only had pants to his name when Tobias found him wandering the land. Sadly, many plantation owners were not following the new laws regarding the abolishment of slavery, leaving many slaves confused on wether they could rightfully leave their plantations and harsh conditions.  This is a flyer from 1860, posted by Edmund Jones informing people of his runaway slave tha...
