Fort Caroline Located in Arlington, Jacksonville Florida.

My Thursday afternoon started off with me making my cup of coffee and heading out the door in search for Fort Caroline memorial in Jacksonville Florida. Fort Caroline was exactly 25 minutes from my house and is located in the northern Arlington area. I arrived at Fort Caroline park at 10am and made my way into the trail. I spent about 45 minutes walking around the park and taking pictures. I also did some research the day before to learn a little more about this fort before I explored it.

Fort Caroline was built in 1564 by the French ruler, Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere. This time period is important because at the time, the French were colonizing Florida in attempts to get ahead of Spain. According to the book, The History of Florida by Michael Gannon, The ruling of Fort Caroline did not last long. "Supplies soon ran short in Fort Caroline, and not enough food could be obtained from the natives. A series of mutinies and desertions began. Eleven men fled in a small craft, and then in December 1564, seventy men captured Laudonniere and forced him to authorize their departure in two vessels" (Lyon 56). Fort Caroline was ultimately a defeat for the French. It was taken over by Spaniards in 1565.

This was the entrance to the park, where you could enter a visitor center and find out more information about Fort Caroline. The trail also had many different paths called, "nature trails," which you could walk down and enjoy the scenery.

I was lucky enough to see a boat that was leaving the dock while I was walking the trail!

This is the entrance to the memorial of Fort Caroline. It had little posters telling you bits of history and a large archway leading into the fort reenactment.

  1. Grayson,
I really like how you set the scene for your site visits. It makes them more interesting and dramatic, haha. I also went to Fort Caroline for my second site visit. I went with my mom, my dad, and my puppy. My mom says she thinks I've been there before this site visit but I don't remember ever visiting this historical site. It was very cool. Reading the information on the boards helped me to better understand what we'd been reading about. Cool post!
