Chapter 10 Worksheet

Hello! I am posting a worksheet for my Florida History class at FSCJ-

(My answers are in RED)

McCoy/AMH2070         CHAPTER ANALYSIS  WORKSHEET           Name: Grayson Foye

                                                       (40 total points)

(2) Cite your Article (in proper APA format):

Gannon, Michael. The History of Florida. University Press of Florida, 2018.

Focus Questions:

(1)   Who are the authors?

Susan Richbourgh + William Coker

(5) Identify and discuss the issue of “perspective” with regards to Anglo writings of Spanish Government.

Englishmen and Anglo Americans writing at the same time as the second Spanish period was an issue because they only saw Spanish government. This inaccurately portrayed what was happening because it only reflected Anglophile viewpoints.

(2)   How did Spain cede one territory and receive two back twenty years later?

The treaty of Versailles peace negations.

(5) Describe the two territories, their locations, capitols, and industry & resources

East + West FL, divided by the Apalachicola River. The two capitols were St Augustine and Pensacola. The St Mary’s River divided east Florida from the new state of Georgia. The northern part of west Florida was moved up to include more fertile lands and fur trapping capabilities.

(8) What are some of the turning points for the rapid turnover of FL (Spanish/British/Spanish/U.S.)

The British acquired FL through the treaty of Paris after the French and Indian War.

The Spanish acquired it back from the British after the second treaty of Paris after the American Revolution.

(5) Present evidence of Political, Social, and Economic influence/affects in Chapter 10

Political: Government had a lot to do with the sharing of land between countries in this era. Even after the treaty was signed, since the newly founded USA was republican, there was a lot of doubt whether they could control their large amount of land.

Social: The Roman Catholic faith was the only permitted religion in the Spanish Florida, although there were a lot of British protestants who still occupied the Florida’s.

Economic: Spain had a large military dwelling in east Florida, but then died down after not matching the productivity of the locals trade. Between 1790-1800, east Florida lost over 30% of its military power.

(2)What do you find most interesting about this article?

I find the turnover of Florida the most interesting thing about this article. I had no idea how many people had control over FL before it was handed over to the U.S.

(10) ARTISTIC/CREATIVE Appendix Choices: (choose 1 – this assignment PLUS the chosen visual appendix will be your first Portfolio Entry) It MUST be a different form from your first Worksheet Assignment

2.     Print/draw a map outline and label sites of East/West FL with Capitols, rivers, ports & border state/regions
