Fort Clinch in Fernandina Beach, Florida
Today started with an early morning drive to Fernandina Beach FL, where Fort Clinch is located. I grabbed a coffee and me and mom were out the door by 10am. The drive was a quick 55 minutes from my house in Jacksonville, but it turned out to be a well worth drive after arriving at the fort itself. Fort Clinch was built in 1847 where the goal was protection of the georgia coast. However, the civil war forced the fort into being mostly vacant for the years during the war and hereafter. General Robert E. Lee forced evacuation of this fort in 1862 and the fort has not been used since. It stands now as history of what could have been, and a force to be reckoned with for anyone who challenged the southern Georgia border.

After entering the state park, we were met by the visitor center, where the kind people explained a little about the fort and helped us get inside. The first thing you see is the giant American flag in the center of the forts courtyard, signifying our freedom from the British.
After the flag view, we walked around and saw some Barracks that the soilders occupied during the civil war. These barracks contained beds with super thin mattresses, filled with hay and grass. Every room had a table in the middle with a lantern or candle. Some rooms we passed had barrels full of gunpowder, aother weapons which wouldve been used to defend the southern border.
The cannons of Fort Clinch were used to defend the fort from any enemies who coudve been northern U.S. troops, or british troops sailing from the east. These cannons were on swivels so that they could have been aimed for more precise targeting.
The second picture is my and my mom exploring the outside of Fort Clench, we saw every entrance including the center main entrance. The main entrance was my favorite because of the entryway with the view of the flag.
Here are some more pictures of our trip up to Fernandina, along with the brochure and receipt of purchase.
Grayson, I am really excited that you did Fort Clinch. My boyfriend and I went on our first anniversary date 4 years ago. We have been meaning to go back because we really enjoyed it. I thought about going back for my site visit but I decided to try going somewhere I haven't been yet. I like how you said a quick 55 minute drive. I wish there was a photo of you so I could put a face to the name. The first picture you have at the top is beautiful you did a great job photographing the Fort.
