(10) One argument presented is that Historic Accounts are not always cut & dry/ certain.  Discuss 2 examples within this chapter that supports this idea.  (pg. 18.28)

            1. Juan Ponce was not the first discoverer, in fact many Spain ships sailed to Florida before him on slave missions in order to bring them back to Spain for monetary gain.

            2. The local tribes were not always offensive to new discoverers, in fact, according to Kilmer’s podcast, the Calusa tribe were actually more intrigued by new discoverers rather than dangerous. Sadly, most of the Spanish explorers were the cause for bloodshed.

(1)   Explore the discussion of the Fountain of Youth and its validity (pg. 19).

The fountain of youth was a fountain that supposedly had anti-aging properties, but is unfortunately just a legend from Bimini. The mythical waters were not discussed in Juan Ponce’s very detailed Fernando II. 

(5) Describe political or social policy mentioned within the chapter.  Be sure to include:

Old Spain rulers/ruling bodies: Carlos V – King of Spain, sailed to san Carlos to explore, but fought many Calusa. Ultimately ended with the death of Juan Ponce.

adelantado: Title for noble service given by a Spanish king.

 Requirirmiento: declaration to take over land and fight local tribes when necessary. 

 New Laws of 1542: Series of laws to regulate the enslavement of local tribes in exploration groups.

(1)   What animal was introduced to Florida by de Soto?

In 1539 De Soto introduced pigs into the Florida wildlife.

(2)What is the “microbial invasion”?       

         The microbial invasion is the introduction of certain microbes to local Florida tribes. Many people believe that warfare was the reason of death among tribes in old Florida, but in fact it was the new germs that killed the tribes such as the Calusa.

(5) Present reasons supporting settlement of Florida AND arguments against the settlement of Florida based on the text of Chapter 2 

Supporting- New land for the Spanish, new opportunities, better production/trade, advancement of technologies, new food/materials,

(1)   What do you find most interesting about this article?

I find that the most interesting thing about this chapter is that Michael Gannon is not afraid to tell the truth about Florida’s real history. Some of the explorers did not go about settling Florida in a humane way. Some of my previous knowledges about Florida/Juan Ponce have been altered for the better by this chapter.

 In the novel, A Land Remembered, Tobias provides a guy named Skillit with a job after he was freed from slavery. Slavery was abolished May 20th 1865 and was abolished under Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. It took the state of Florida an extra 2 years after the Emancipation to officially abolish slavery in the Floridas.  But, even after the slaves were "officially free," there were many slaves who had no where to go after they were legally free, and many were still enslaved after the proclomation. In the novel, A Land Remembered, Skillit was on the run after he was freed, but had nowhere to go. He only had pants to his name when Tobias found him wandering the land. Course Reflection

 Hello! This will be my final post on this Florida History Blog. I have thoroughly enjoyed this class and the learning style that Professor McCoy has given us. This paragraph below you explains some of the topics that I learned throughout the course of this Florida History class. Having lived in Florida all my life, I had no idea all the stages that Florida went through to become the Florida we know and love. In this class I learned about the ancient tribes that lived in Florida before us. My favorite of these tribes was The Calusa. I enjoyed learning about their belief system, and how they thought the afterlife was going to be. Regarding race, I had a prior knowledge to the evils that were committed in Florida throughout the civil war, but this class explained in further detail the grit of slavery in the south.
